DEME

Context

At DEME, leadership isn’t just about achieving results. It’s about resilience, engagement, and the ability to inspire people in complex, dynamic environments. As a global player in dredging, offshore, infrastructure, and environmental technologies, DEME faces unique challenges. Their projects are international, demanding, and require leaders who are not only technically proficient but also capable of connecting and inspiring people.

In 2022, DEME embarked on an ambitious journey: developing a leadership program that not only addresses the company’s current needs but also prepares it for the challenges of tomorrow.

Insight

The question: how do you make leadership future-proof?
Leadership at DEME needed to go beyond standard training programs. The aim was to design a program that reflects DEME’s core values: We care, we dare, we deliver. From newcomers to strategic leaders, everyone would benefit from tailored learning journeys.

Najwa Abid, HR Manager Talent at DEME, explains:
“We wanted programs that truly resonate with our people and their career paths. Not standard solutions, but initiatives that are relevant and impactful at every career stage.”

Solution

Co-creation with impact: learning tailored to context and needs
In close collaboration with Beanmachine, DEME developed two flagship programs:

  • DEME Essentials
Focused on new employees, this two-day training emphasizes self-awareness, communication, and energy management.
  • DEME First Time Leader
An intensive four-day training for new leaders, focusing on interpersonal skills, team dynamics, and effective feedback.

These programs are not standalone initiatives but are part of an integrated leadership strategy. They offer a natural progression from entry-level to strategic leadership roles, aiming to create a shared leadership framework across the organization.

What makes this collaboration unique is its contextual approach. Each program was designed to address the specific challenges DEME leaders face: balancing technical and soft skills, managing diverse international teams, and leading in complex project environments.

Results

Laying the foundation for sustainable leadership
The leadership programs provide participants with valuable insights and skills, while also strengthening team collaboration and the company culture.

A participant from DEME First Time Leader reflects:
“It’s not just about what you do but how you do it. I now have the tools to fulfill my role with confidence and effectiveness.”

Najwa looks ahead:
“Together with Beanmachine, we are planting the seeds for a new generation of leaders. What we sow today will make the organization future-proof in 10 to 15 years.”

With leadership as their compass, DEME and Beanmachine are building a culture where results and people-centricity go hand in hand.
